The Kiss if a Rose by Augustina Van Hoven

Title: The Kiss of a Rose
Author: Augustina Van Hoven
Genre: Paranormal Romance

A DISTANT PAST

In 1882, Rose Van Buren loved the wrong man and paid for it with her life. Now, more than a century later, the angel Gabriel has granted her another shot at living. In exchange, she must convince a smart, handsome, up-and-coming lawyer to set aside his lofty ambitions.

A FUTURE PRESENT

Stephen Winship is headed straight for the governor’s chair. He has a brilliant career, solid allies, and a seemingly perfect girlfriend. But night after night he finds himself dreaming of a heavenly beauty, a luminous but long-dead girl. Like some altered Ghost of Christmas Past, she shows him her own tragic tale in order to “save him.” And he’s beginning to see Rose is risking her heart as much as baring her soul. Yet falling for her will cost him everything—and open him up to a happiness he never imagined.

Excerpt:

Rose wrapped her arms around her body and hugged herself. So much depended on her success. She would have to show this stranger very private, very painful details of her life to persuade him to change his course.

A tear rolled down her cheek. All during her training she kept asking one question: What had her father given up so she could have this chance? But none of the angels would answer her. More tears slid down her face. The thought she might not succeed was almost too much to bear. She wiped her cheeks with her hands. This wasn’t the time to give in to despair. She could do this—she had to.

Rose tilted her head to get a better view of Stephen. Gabriel told her his name but not the reason why he should not become governor. It doesn’t matter. As far as she was concerned, this assignment was to save her father, not Stephen.

Rose studied the man. He looked peaceful in his sleep. His wavy, brown hair was shorter than she was used to seeing on a man, but it had a pleasant shape. She’d only seen him that day in the snow. She hadn’t been able to see much of his face then, he was bundled up so tightly against the cold, but she could not forget his eyes. Grey like the sea, deep, thoughtful, and so sad. He’d left her one flower out of the bouquet he carried. She wondered who had received the rest.

The mirror made a popping sound and the haze from the glass disappeared. She looked up at the ceiling of the house. That was her signal. Time to begin.

The air felt cold as she waved her hand around. Rose took a cautious step onto the polished wood floor. The man stirred again.

She took a deep breath and quietly crept to the bed.

Stephen rested on his back with his head slightly turned toward her. She parted her lips and reached out with her hand. She had a sudden desire to stroke his handsome face. She quickly pulled her hand back in shock. A flush crept up her cheeks and she glanced away from him. This wasn’t right. She’d never been this forward before. But still, there was something about his hair, the stubble on his face, and the memory of his beautiful grey eyes that caused her heart to flutter.

She took another deep breath and sat on the edge of his bed. Time to act. The angels’ warnings rang in her head. She had very little energy, very little time, once she crossed over the divide. Rose closed her eyes and concentrated like her instructors had taught her. She extended her thoughts until they slowly connected with his mind and she could see inside his dream. She carefully altered the scene and stepped inside.
