Today I'm featuring a book spotlight and review for Rapture by Phillip W. Simpson.
Ya Dystopian
Date Published: 12/1/2011
The Rapture has occurred - the end of the world. The
faithful have risen up to Heaven. Those left behind are in a living hell. Armed
only with his swords and his wit, a teenage boy wanders this post-apocalyptic
world alone, separated forever from everyone he loves. Cursed by his demonic
heritage, he must now embark on a quest that will take him across the US to the
City of Angels.
Excellent, well written plot intended to capture the
reader’s attention from beginning to end!!
That’s exactly what I thought about this book. It
was gripping, mind blowing, and not overly preachy, which I enjoyed. The author
did an amazing job at keeping me interested and wanting to find out what
happens next. I just couldn’t put it down.
The story moves along quickly and yes, it’s very
intriguing. It did a great job at keeping me guessing, entertained, and above
all, craving to know what would happen next.
Sam was my overall favorite character and I did find
myself admiring him. He’s very strong in a sweet kind of way, which I loved.

Today I have a great review for Innovera Yakov: The Journey of A Thousand Eyes. But first, a quick sneak peek, which includes synopsis and book excerpt.
Book Blurb:
Innovera Yakov is a beautiful world of crystals that
turns under five moons and two brilliant suns that never set. Flitters take
care of domestic chores while Starbirds and Starflies soar through the
never-ending sunlight of this crystalline world. The Circle of Knowing decides
their fate; the forbidden forests of the Dimmer Zone swallow trespassers. And
at the very edges of Innovera Yakov there is the terrifying watery darkness of
Verheer.
We meet Ayana, the healer and lonely outcast with
her scarred face; Vinton, her protector (or is he her imaginary friend?); Gamma
and Blu Tara, the beautiful, fiery twins who can kill with one look. These
twins are important characters in the book. They could hardly be more different
from each other. Krave, beloved by Gamma, hated by Blu Tara, ‘tall and upright
as a polished spear with a beautiful crop of golden hair that cascaded down his
back in waves’; his ‘brother’ Skylar, pure trouble with ‘muscles on his arms
and legs that stood out in lumps’; Ryder with his crystal spear, forever
seeking Ayana’s approval although she, refusing to believe she's worth it, can
only wonder, ‘What does he see in me?’ And Ice, mysterious, dangerous,
murderous with eyes like bright furnaces who feeds on Innoverans. These young
Innoverans are often haunted by a forgotten past recalled only in strange
dreams. They form friendships, make enemies and face constant physical and
emotional challenges that test them to their limits. They have amazing powers;
they can fly, they can communicate through 'thought-words', their minds can
travel to other worlds. They harbour secrets.
But life is not easy on Innovera Yakov and the young
Beings must live in constant fear of Blu Tara; ‘What I want, I have. What I
can’t have, I destroy.’ They find that the great powers they are gifted with
are nothing compared to the dangers they face. They must shelter from
Solar-storms. To fall in love is dangerous. Lovers long to combine to become
stronger, better Beings but it can go terribly wrong and when that happens they
perish. Their survival is further threatened by Ice, who consumes Innoverans
and holds both Blu Tara and Ayana in his control.
Everyone seeks a partner with whom they can ‘merge.’
This desire to ease the passage through life by joining forces with a true
companion, is one of the main themes of the story. Love for Blu Tara, is a
terrible thing. She tells her sister, ‘It is a curse. You will scoop out your
core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love... You will steal
another person’s life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will kill or
die for it. And you’ll hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you.'
They are told that they must embark on 'The
Journey', this journey will be more terrifying than any of them could imagine
and a strong leader must be elected from their midst. They are shocked to
discover who that leader is, none more so than the chosen one herself. Many of
them will perish as they make their way through the watery darkness of Verheer
while battling the army of underworld warriors bent on destroying and consuming
them.
Finally, diminished in strength and numbers, they
reach their journey’s end only to learn the final brutal truth.
Book Excerpt:
Blu Tara stared her sister in the face. ‘Let me tell
you what you don't know about love, Gamma. It is a curse. You will scoop out
your core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love. You will steal
another person's life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will abandon
the world you have been cradled in, betray everything and everyone you care
for. You’ll give up your name for it.’
Blu Tara's voice went soft and dreamy. ‘You will
gladly close your eyes and embrace the world of darkness. You will kill or die
for it. And you will hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you. So
don’t talk to me about love.’
Gamma shook her head. ‘You're not making sense,’ Blu
Tara. ‘You talk as if... I’m the one who should be upset about all this.’
Blu Tara lifted her hand dismissively. She pointed a
hot finger at Gamma. ‘Anyway don’t forget what we are.’
'And what are we?’ Gamma glared at her..
'Different. Strange. Something to be frightened of.
Two Beings that can fuse and burn everything to ashes. That's the way they all
see us down there. That's what the Stardog wants from you - the powers you
possess.
‘I hate them all. With their suspicious, shiny faces
and their empty games. I hate that Voice which drones on and on at us in the
Learning Dome as soon as we've finished resting.
Innoverans! All those perfect, pretty Beings; they
remember nothing — it’s the curse of this shallow, shining world. Tell me,
Gamma - what do you remember of the world we come from before your Odors Apeno
dumped us here?’
Gamma swung around to face her sister fully. ‘Blu
Tara! What's got into you? Where’s all that coming from? I've never heard you
speak like that before. This is about Krave and I- not you!’
Krave and you - don't make me laugh. And, oh! Here’s
a big difference — between you and I this time, Twin Sister. It’s the answer to
your question that you brought me up here to ask.’ Blu Tara mimicked Gamma's
soft and musical voice, Why do you want to kill Krave?
Here's the answer, Gamma. I will do whatever I have
to do to save myself. I'm the half of you that's not like you. I don't have a
weeping heart. Now I'm out of here. I need my Rest.
My Review:
This book definitely did its job when it came to
taking the reader to a fantasy world filled with wonders and great adventures.
The plot is unique and very different from any I’ve
read before. When you read certain parts, it almost feels as if you’re watching
a movie instead of reading a story. However, I did feel as if there were parts
of the story I would have liked for the author to develop more since I found
myself a little confused at times. And I would have liked for more backstory on
some of the characters as well.
But the originality of the characters and the story
itself. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.

When the hunted becomes the predator.
Scarlett Lyttleskeill departs from London with her
Aunt Celia in a ship destined to take them both towards a new beginning at a
small village called Clearwater Eden somewhere along the coasts of The New
World. However, what she never expects to find while living in said town is a
settlement determined to sacrifice whatever they have to in order to keep lands
they now claim as theirs.
As Scarlett arrives at Clearwater she realizes that
the villagers keep secrets that literally kill and that if you cross them the
wrong way those who once received you with open arms might just be willing to
call upon supernatural forces just to get rid of you.
Book
Excerpt:
The dream that greeted me was different this time.
Instead of having flashes of deadly images, or finding myself inside the
beast’s body, I found myself standing in the middle of the woods, alone. I
could tell right away I was standing in the middle of the forest but I had no
clue as to where the exact location was. However, the eerie silence that
surrounded me did not go unnoticed. Everything was silent, eerily still, and
startlingly dark.
It was somewhat of a relief to know I was alone.
However, that relief shattered the instant the beast stepped out from within
the shadows and walked straight toward me until we were nearly face to face. No
matter how much I tried to run and scream, I found that I could do neither. My
body and mind were frozen with fear within moments.
As if to get a point across to me, he slowly
approached on two steady hind legs. The slowness in his gait was deliberate and
meant to intimidate me. There was no doubt in my mind about that. To make
matters even worse than what they already were, his massive size hit me like a
ton of bricks. Here was a beast that was three times my size and twice as wide.
Should he desire to pick me up and tear me to pieces, he could have done so
without the slightest trouble.
However, none of those characteristics stood out to
me nearly as much as the scent of lavender that wafted up my nostrils. It
didn’t take long for me to realize that the odor was coming from the actual
beast, and I could only wonder how a creature so foul could smell so incredibly
good.
Although his scent was an enigma in itself, his
physical appearance was absolutely staggering. The beast resembled a cross
between animal and human. He had long arms and legs, a big head equipped with
pointy ears, a large snout filled with sharp canines, thick muscles that
protruded from his massive frame, and a body covered with short brown hair. I
had never seen anything like him before, and terror comes short of describing
what I felt upon gazing at this demon.
When he stepped close enough to me that I could make
out every detail of his huge yellow eyes, I nearly swooned. Shaking with fear,
I simply gazed up at his terrifying profile.
Soon,
I will come for you.
About the author:
As a child, she used to lose herself in an imaginary
world by the means of a good book. Now that she’s all grown up, Kristy gets to
create her own fictional realms and make them come to life in ways that most
readers might not expect.
She’s always had a passion for writing but never had
the opportunity do so until now. After trying out numerous options, she realized
that writing was what she loved the most so when she found herself with some
free time on her hands, she decided to pursue her passion. As it turned out, her
very active imagination helped her achieve her goals of creating believable
plots with some ordinary, and some not so ordinary characters that helped the
stories move along in one way or another.
As she keeps moving along in achieving her dreams of
becoming a published author, she divides her time in between her four children
and her very understanding husband.
Today I have a book promo to share with you. My guest for today is author Debra L. Hartmann and the book spotlight for this post includes a sneak peek at her novel, Twisted Fate.
Book Blurb: A troubled sixteen year old girl moves away from home, her parents unwilling to tolerate her not complying with their devout religious beliefs as Jehovah's Witnesses. Finally free of the strict rules and isolated lifestyle she had known her whole life, she is faced with making her own decisions and choices about her future for the first time. On the first day in town, she falls under the spell of a man ten years older and finds herself blinded by love. Fate is a member of a very dangerous bike club and while he gives her love and family like she has never known he confuses and entraps her with abuse and torturous experiences that she is made to believe are normal for a biker's ole lady, as life inside a motorcycle gang is explored and exposed. Her strength carries her through the unthought-of abuses and twisted existence until a surprising ending that will shock and awe the reader while revealing the survival instincts that no woman should ever have to fall back on. This book is to be the first in a series that will continue to open the reader’s eyes to the ups and downs of the biker lifestyle, the ins and outs of loving the wrong men and the strength that all women possess to rise above anything and everything that diminishes or strips them of respect for themselves and love and happiness.
Book Excerpt:
"He knew it wouldn’t take much to find out all he needed to know. He’d hate it if she wasn’t a virgin but depending on how useful she could be, he might be able to forgive her that one. She looked like she would be fun to party with; he decided he would start off slow and easy with her so he could learn what her buttons were before he took her for himself. Such good timing too, just getting out of prison the day before and already bored staying at his parent’s house while he was supposed to find a job and keep up with his parole."
Debra L Hartmann is from a small town just east of Asheville, NC called Swannanoa. The 'natives' refer to it as Swannanowhereand even today it has the least amount of traffic of any of the surrounding areas of Asheville and has maintained its quiet, slow country charm despite the rapid growth all around. She is a country girl at heart and though educated and with an excellent professional resume, she is much happier writing from home where she now resides miles from any city. Debra is also a motorcycle enthusiast, has been mesmerized by the biker lifestyle for as long as she can remember and got her first Harley at age 17. Her first book is based on her own life experiences from age 16 and as the book becomes a series of books, readers will learn more and more about what it's like for a woman in an MC and later an independent in the biker community. It's important to Debra that the general public learns how incredibly wrong they are to judge a book by its cover. 'Bikers' are often generally referred to as biker trash when in reality, most are no different thaneveryone else except in their choices of clothing, transportation and how they spend their free time. Debra was an executive level manager for two major companies, later a successful business owner and these days a successful editor and published author. On the weekends, you'll find her snuggled up behind her wonderful husband riding the amazing curvy mountain roads surrounding Asheville NC on their old school Ironhead custom Harley. Debra also writes short stories and articles and is a big advocate for supporting new authors through her work in providing an editing service with lower pricing standards, resources on various websites and informative blog posts.

Book Blurb:
Talia has a secret, one that will save her world and yet rip it apart. Only she can decide if the price is worth it.
Scientist Talia Zaryn has always had visions of an alien invasion and of her own death. She’s kept it a secret, hoping they are nothing more than childish nightmares. But when her face in the mirror matches that of her dreams, she fears the dreams are prophetic. Talia must prove that life exists beyond their planet, Sendek; perhaps then people will prepare to fight.
Talia’s work at the Space Exploration Foundation leaves no time for personal relationships, but Major Landry Sutton isn’t looking for a friend. He’s looking for a traitor. His ability to sense emotions convinces him Talia is that traitor until a touch sizzles between them. In an instant their minds are connected and they can communicate telepathically. Just as the two begin to trust each other, the invading force arrives.
Talia and Landry must uncover the secrets of Sendek’s past if they hope to defeat these terrifying creatures. And Talia is the key—if only she can learn to trust the magic coursing through her veins.
Book Excerpt:
Chapter 1
The Planet Sendek
A third vehicle carrying Space Exploration Foundation equipment had been attacked. The sleek bullet-shaped tram lay crumpled beside its track across half a mile of protected lands like an accordion. Its silver exterior marred by scorches and the thick orange foam used to put out the flames. The last car in line had been ripped open, its contents carried away while those guarding it had been left in a bloody heap in the corner. The terrorists had left forty people dead and stolen military grade communications technology.
“There’s another reason to stop traveling for the SEF.” Talia rubbed the stone necklace resting at her throat.
She didn’t want to look at the bodies so she focused on the surrounding wilderness. Trees, grass, everything near the tracks had been burned. The reporter rambled on about the environmental disaster as if no one had lost their lives. Talia was relieved when the news feed was interrupted by the house computer, “Incoming call, SEF President Cahal.”
Talia stood and smoothed her hair back. “Accept call.”
The disturbing images were replaced by a gray-haired man in his sixties, sitting at a desk overflowing with books and papers. His normally kind face looked ashen.
“Miss Zaryn, have you been watching the news nets?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. The program has taken a hit that puts us months, maybe a year behind schedule.”
“I can begin work on another satellite as soon as the parts are delivered.”
“Not this time. The board has decided it would be safer to bring you here. The parts are waiting for you and this time you’ll have a skilled team to help. I’ve purchased a ticket from Gneledar to Joharadin for nine rising tomorrow. Your apartment will be ready by the time you arrive.”
Talia’s knees weakened. She stepped behind the couch and leaned on the back of it for support. Her vision blurred and then she remembered to breathe.
“I can’t move to Joharadin.”
“Sure you can. You’ve traveled to other locations for us, and it’s about time you stayed here for a while. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally convince you to make this your permanent home.”
It would be permanent all right. Death always was. She squeezed the couch tighter to keep her hands from trembling. There was no way out of it and no way to explain. At least not in a way a man of science could understand or accept, but Cahal had given in to her before. She had to try one more time.
“Sir, I’ve always worked remotely from my living room. There’s no need for me to move to Joharadin.”
“Miss Zaryn, this is about more than a few attacks and setbacks. The Royalists are making a big deal out of this. They’ve started an investigation into the SEF because they think we’re leaking critical information to some unnamed terrorist group.”
“You know I’m not the leak. I don’t have access to transport details.”
“It doesn’t matter what I think. The Royalists are insisting that every member of our team be present in a face-to-face presentation.” Cahal clasped his hands in front of him and leaned toward her from his desk. “That includes you. Either you can move here for the next year of your own free will, or the Royalists will arrest you and drag you here anyway.”
“Yes, sir.” Talia’s shoulders sagged. “Cahal, can I ship a personal project I’m working on as well?”
“You can send anything you like, as long as you’re on that tram tomorrow. Unless I can convince you to take an aeroflyer?” His eyebrows lifted in hope.
Talia sighed, “I’ll be on the tram. You know I prefer to stay close to the ground.”
“I know, but you’re going to have to get over that. The environmentalists have been trying to phase out the tram lines for years, and these attacks have added fuel to their cause. The aeroflyers will soon be the only way to travel.”
“I’ll cross that bridge when I have to.”
“Very well. I’m meeting you myself, so there’s no backing out. I’ll come all the way to Gneledar before I let the Royalists bring you in.” He winked at her and let the ghost of a smile twitch the corners of his lips. With a wave of his hand the Space Exploration Foundation’s emblem replaced his image.
Talia collapsed on the couch and stared at the phoenix rising into a star filled sky. After a moment, the screen shut off and she rested her head in her hands. Joharadin, capital of Algodova. There were plenty of reasons to stay as far away from there as possible but no way to explain them to Cahal. Sometimes he exuded a grandfatherly attitude toward her, but he was still a man of science. Talk of prophetic dreams would not go over well, especially as an excuse.
A small furry creature shot from under the table and bounced onto her lap. He nuzzled his way under her arms and Talia stroked his back and fluffy tail. With each movement he fanned his tail wider and purred in contentment.
“Keeta, you always know how to make me smile. Don’t worry, you’re coming with me.” She stared into his bulging black eyes that swiveled back and forth. “Maybe I should set you free instead.”
Keeta trilled, spun in a circle, and lay down in her lap. With a laugh, Talia set him down on the couch. She knew she could never leave him behind.
“Raise blinds.” Talia spoke the command and the house computer obeyed.
She rose from the couch and walked to the window. The trees blocked the view of the city, but she knew it was there. Her hometown.
Generally, she welcomed traveling to other cities for the SEF. The weeks and months in the company of co-workers offered a semblance of a social life not available to her at home. But not Joharadin. Just the thought of the city from her nightmares caused her skin to crawl and her heart to race. A dull ache formed behind her eyes and she rubbed at her temple.
The light from Sendek’s double suns filtered through the trees and into her living room. Flecks of gold danced with the shimmery green across the floor. The movement imitated her nerves. It was already starting. I’ll dream tonight. Talia sent her thoughts out into the trees and waited for their answer. Keeta’s head popped up as if he were listening as well. We will be here when you do. The trees sang back.
A wave of comfort washed over her, and she relished it as she turned away from the peaceful view to pack her things. The satellite in the spare room needed to be disassembled and packed into crates. She also needed to pack her clothes, which she did while trying not to think of her nightmares. How many times had she worn the red outfit in them? Perhaps she should leave it and pack something she had never worn in the dream? Would that give her a better chance of escaping fate?
In the end, she stuffed shirts and slacks in the bag without looking at them. It wouldn’t really matter. One time she had recycled all of her clothes, purchased new ones, and then dreamed about each outfit over the course of two months. The dreams changed to fit whatever she owned.
The last thing she did before crawling into bed was set out her journal and a pen. When the vision came she would be ready to record it. Keeta curled up at her feet, and Talia hoped that this time she could change the ending to her nightmare.
* * *
Death lurked in the shadows. Talia’s shaking fingers clenched into a fist. Where’s the door to the library?
Her breath came in shallow bursts as she ran beneath the circles of light cast by the bulbs dangling from the ceiling. The dim glow reflected off the water filling the hall as she splashed through the underground tunnel. I have to find it before I wake. Talia ran her hands along the stone wall, bits of dirt and moss crumbling from her touch. There was no sign of the door.
The cold seeped through her blouse and she shivered. The ache in her chest felt real enough. Her confidence that this was the dream wavered until the two men stumbled into view.
Long black robes hung heavy around their legs. The men paused in a circle of light while the fatter of the two gasped for breath. He leaned against the wall, ready to collapse. No, not yet. Talia slapped the stone wall.
“I need more time,” she screamed down the corridor, but the men ignored her.
They always did.
Her mouth moved in sync with the man’s words, “It’s too late. They’re here.”
Talia’s body reacted immediately. Dream or not, her heart beat quickened as three huge creatures walked out of the shadows. They moved in silence, barely disturbing the water with their smooth motion. Two legs, but definitely not human. The creatures towered over the men by several feet. They had elongated faces traced with ridgelines surrounding yellow-green eyes. The ridges accented a muscular thickness that lined the shoulders and moved up the neck. Their skin had a peculiar opalescent sheen making it hard to decide the color in this weak lighting, but she knew from other dreams that it was a deep green.
Talia had dubbed them Scalies during her childhood years. Now as an adult, they still evoked a hopeless dread deep within her soul. Calm down. The silent mantra did nothing for her nerves. Every particle of her being ached to run.
“You know there is no escape from the Draguman,” one Scaly spoke to the men in a low smooth voice.
Talia stiffened. Draguman? Is that their name?
They had never spoken before. The deeply accented voice resonated to her core, but a grating harshness lay under the warm tones. Fighting the urge to run, she inched along the wall toward escape.
A Scaly pointed his staff-like pole at the two men and fired. The tunnel glowed red-orange, burning their deaths into her memory—fire and scorched bones. She hung her head as their ashes floated past. How many times had she watched similar scenes?
“Now we will take care of our other problem.”
Talia’s head snapped up in time to see the red light rushing toward her. She gasped and flung her arms up to defend herself.
She was back in her own bed. Stupid. Flesh doesn’t block plasma weapons.
Talia stared at the ceiling and tried to catch her breath. Every muscle in her body tensed and cramped from the running. Her skin burned and she knew it was turning an angry red. If she was lucky, she wouldn’t get blisters this time.
Keeta crawled up to the pillow beside her and whimpered.
“Sorry to wake you.” It came out a whisper.
Keeta wiggled his backside at the sound of her voice and moved in to lick Talia’s shoulder. Her arms and legs twitched as they relaxed. The feverish heat drained into the air, leaving only sticky cold perspiration. Then came the shivering she could never control. She closed her eyes and waited for the shaking to stop, trying to concentrate on the little tongue licking the inside of her elbow. Sometimes Keeta’s saliva eased the ache of cuts and scrapes she received from the dream, but she doubted it would help the blistering.
This nightmare had always been a part of her life. Although the locations and method of death changed, each dream took place within one city—Joharadin. Talia had accepted she would never be free from the visions until the Scalies found her or she found them. It might be pointless, but she would keep searching for clues. This one had brought a new piece of information she could record.
“Lights.” Talia flinched as the lights flared on. “Dim fifty percent.” The room automatically adjusted to the command.
The leather journal waited on the bedside table. It was cool in her hands as she hugged it close for a moment. She flipped through and glanced at the other dreams she had recorded. The last time she had stood in that tunnel she found a secret library. Unfortunately, the Scalies, no, the Draguman, had found her before she could read any of the ancient texts on the shelves. Talia turned to a new page. She wrote the day, time, and setting before writing: Tonight they spoke. They called themselves the Draguman. What’s more it seems they are aware of me. Perhaps searching for me? Whatever the case, they think I’m a problem. One they won’t have any trouble disposing of.
A new shaking started. In twenty-eight years of dreaming Talia had never considered they might be hunting her. She let Keeta crawl under the blanket to curl up next to her. His soft fur and rhythmic breathing continued to calm her while she tried to ignore the way the sheet chaffed her tender skin.
“The sunsrise won’t come soon enough.”
Keeta sighed, and Talia knew he was already asleep. She held him close and waited. He might calm her spirit, but only the energy from Sendek’s binary suns could heal her body.
